Skiing in Finland
Finland offers unspoilt wilderness, fantastic scenery and uncrowded pistes.
Most Western Europeans tend to not stray far from their familiar European resorts but the ones who do venture into Finland are blown away by its beautiful scenery and the charming Lappish hospitality, leading them to return year after year.
Ski Resorts in Finland
Our most popular ski resorts in Finland are Levi and Yllas.
Finland consistently turns out some of the best skiers and snowboarders in the world. This is of little surprise when you consider that their history and culture has always been closely linked with winter sports.
Finland’s winter resorts reflect the high esteem in which they regard skiing, snowboarding, as well as less popular pursuits with UK skiers, such as ski jumping and cross country skiing. Whilst those of you who have skied the higher alpine resorts in France and Switzerland may regard the mountains in Finland as flatter and less inspiring than their more southern counterparts, the sheer enthusiasm and friendliness exhibited by the locals does go some way to making up for the deficiencies.
- Levi Ski Resort
- Right in the heart of Lapland, Levi is one of the biggest resorts in Scandinavia with 15 lifts in total. The pistes tend to be much quieter than most will be used to, with everyone (with the exception of real expert skiers) catered for. Although the resort is much lower than its alpine counterparts (the resort is at 206m and the highest lift is at 531m), the resort is incredibly snow-sure due to its high latitude. Whilst relatively expensive, the nightlife is great too.

- Yllas Ski Resort
- Ylläs is the home to the longest runs in Finland. With 61 slopes and 29 lifts Ylläs is the largest resort in Lapland. Standing at 718m, Ylläs fell is one of the highest fells in Lapland surrounded by 2 villages. Queues are few and far between, the slopes are empty compared to most other European resorts and skiing can be enjoyed until late May. Cross-country skiers return to Ylläs year after year; Ylläs boasts a larger network of trails than any other Finnish resort. A total of 330km of meticulously maintained trails are available, and 38km of these trails are illuminated.

- Ruka Ski Resort
- Ruka is a very small resort on the Russian border. Whilst the skiing is fairly limited, the alternative activities make Ruka an attractive destination for families. The whole log cabin, husky sled Lapland theme is done very tastefully and there are great activities on offer, such as dog-sled safari’s and snowmobile excursions.
Ski Holidays in Finland
A winter holiday in at a Finnish ski resort is a once-in-a-lifetime experience; there’s much more to a winter holiday in Finland than simply skiing!
Try your hand at husky sledging, snowmobiling or enjoy the unique experience of staying a night in an igloo or a snow hotel. Experience Finnish traditions, such as dipping into a freezing lake after a hot sauna, and sample local specialities such as reindeer, salmon, mushrooms and berries cooked over an open fire at a local restaurant. Those of you lucky enough may even catch the glimmering blues and greens of the Northern Lights which can often be seen from many parts of the country during winter.
If your idea of a perfect winter’s day is to pull on cross-country skis then head for the forest; even if you decide to visit during the darker time of mid-winter, you’ll still find that most towns and resorts offer many kilometres of floodlit trails.
